Palo Alto Friends Meeting
El Salvador Projects
In
2007 we are providing financial support in 4 communities of El Salvador and
currently we are supporting 18 university students that will be receive financial
support in the form of no interest loans.
Over the years we have found that the fastest and most effective way to end
poverty is through education. Our feeling is that even in the poorest parts
of the world, progress is made when, and changes come about when we educate
the local people.
In 2007 we are supporting 15 high school students and 13 middle school students,
from 2 rural agricultural cooperatives in Morazan and in 1 Christian based
urban community in Apulo. We also are paying the salaries of two librarians
at the school in El Barío, Suchitoto.
The largest part of funds are used in our student loan program, each student receives a monthly stipend to pay for tuition, food and books. We also maintain 3 student houses, 2 in the capital of San Salvador and 1 for our students in San Miguel.
Since
our university student loan program began in 1999, we have now graduated 43
students as teachers, nurses and technicians. In 2006 our first student with
a B. S. degree graduated in business administration(he was the top student
in his class). In 2007, five more students will graduate with B. S. and B.
A. degrees.
