My Story

I was born in 1961 and raised in California, the youngest son of a middle class family. Both my father and mother were Quaker Friends and attended the meeting in Palo Alto, California. I was brought up attending meeting in Palo Alto and studied my sophomore and junior years of high school at John Woolman, a Quaker boarding school in Grass Valley, California.
My mother a Salvadorian immigrant and retired school teacher returned to El Salvador in 1986, accompanying a community that was returning to it's land in one areas that was most affected by the 12 year civil war in El Salvador. In 1986 the civil war was still going strong in El Salvador and my mother Carmen Broz as well as the other foreigners that were in the SHARE FOUNDATION group were captured by the national guard, detained for several days and then kicked out of El Salvador.
In 1991 my mother returned to live in El Salvador and at the same time started with the support of the Palo Alto Friends Meeting what are now known as the El Salvador Projects.
I came to El Salvador in 1994 to visit my mother and instantly fell in love with the country, its people and my wife Tita.
After working as a volunteer for 2 local NGOs and dealing with local corruption, I decided that I was not cut out for this type of employment. In early 1997 I became involved with a group of American Friends Service volunteers that had worked in El Salvador in the 1950s. After some talks I was contracted to work for what has become known as LADSAC Los Amigos de Santa Anita y Cuscatlán (Friends of Santa Anita and Cuscatlan), providing technical assistance to rural communities and agricultural cooperatives in the area of Suchitoto, El Salvador. We now manage a small, low interest rotating fund which is used to provide loans to many organized groups in and around Suchitoto.
I am currently the field worker for both groups, Palo Alto Friends Meeting "El Salvador Projects" and LADSAC, we are always happy to receive and in need of ,volunteers, materials and of course donations.
As you can imagine my life is always very busy, I try to live a balance between work and leisure but many times the work side wins out. I have been married to my Salvadorian wife for over 13 years, we have a 15 year old daughter, a 9 year old son and our youngest daughter Jeannette who was born in August of 2005.
If you or a group that your are involved with would like more information about our projects, please contact me to arrange the details. If you are coming to El Salvador I would be more than happy to meet with and or show you some of the communities where we have been working. I visit the U.S. about every 18 months, so meetings with your church or interested group can be arranged. Meetings with members of our committee in Palo Alto California can also be arranged.
