A masacuata or boa constrictor
is a nocturnal animal, here the snake waits close to a small pond, camouflaged
by the leaves, waiting for it's prey. It is not a venomous snake, it kills
it's prey by suffocating it very slowly and not by breaking its bones as many
believe.
A huge forest cockroach Blaberus sp. about 10 cm long, walks through the leaves on the ground. On the hills of La Culebrilla, in the city of Jutiapa(cabañas) there was a town with the same name, it is gone now.

Un micoleón or kinkajou (Potus Flavus) runs through through the branches of a mango tree after seeing the the light of our flash lights. Later he throws small branches to try to scare us and at the same time giving away his position. The fruit trees of this are although over 30 meters tall are originally from Asia and today submitted the native fruit tree that once grew in this area and provider food for many other species.
The inhabitants of this area abandoned the area during the civil war after it was bombed a few times by the Army. It has never been repopulated. As time goes by nature has take control of these land that before had houses and crops. With out a doubt the native species of plants and animals are returning and taking over this area, being a great example of how natural areas can be recovered, if only given the chance.

A butterfly drinks water from a small spring within the rocks, the presence of water throughout the year is a very important factor for the existence of the animals. Around this small spring you can fin tracks of raccoons, deer, armadillos,bobcats as well as other animals.
The conservation of this area can also be positive for the local populations, like the abundance of water, better climate and views, as well as provide a new source of income, this thanks to eco-tourism this through Photo safaris to see the wild life at night and even through hunting which unfortunately is still not restricted and is practiced through out the country.
